When You Need a Retaining Wall
Any time you transition between elevations — preventing erosion, creating level areas, managing drainage, or adding tiered landscaping. In Georgetown's hilly terrain, retaining walls are especially common.
Types
Gravity walls rely on mass for stability (under 4 feet). Cantilever walls use an L-shaped footing with retained earth helping stabilize (4-10 feet). Anchored walls use cables for additional support (tall walls).
Drainage is Critical
The #1 cause of failure is poor drainage. Every wall needs a perforated drain pipe at the base, granular backfill, and weep holes through the face.
Engineering and Permits
In Williamson County, walls over 4 feet typically require a permit and engineered drawings. Even shorter walls benefit from professional design in our expansive clay soils.
