The Heat Challenge
Above 90°F, concrete becomes much harder to work with — accelerated hydration, reduced working time, increased water demand, rapid surface drying leading to cracking.
Start Early
Most summer pours start at 4-5 AM. This allows critical work before peak heat.
Cool the Concrete
Batch plants use chilled water and ice. Goal: concrete temperature below 90°F at placement.
Retarders
Chemical retarders slow setting time. Evaporation retarders form a thin film reducing moisture loss during finishing. Both are standard for Texas summer work.
Immediate Curing
In 100°F+ heat, concrete loses surface moisture in minutes. Curing compound must be applied immediately after finishing. Fog misting can also help.
Planning
