What Are Footings?
Footings distribute structural weight to the soil — like snowshoes spreading load to prevent sinking. Every permanent structure needs them.
Types
Spread footings support individual columns. Strip footings support walls. Combined footings support multiple columns. Mat footings cover the entire building footprint.
Depth
In Central Texas, depth depends on soil conditions, not frost (unlike northern states). Minimum 12 inches below grade, often deeper in expansive soils. Must rest on undisturbed or compacted soil.
Sizing
Width depends on structural loads and soil bearing capacity. Typical residential strip footing: 16-24 inches wide, 8-12 inches deep, reinforced with #4 or #5 rebar.
Common Mistakes
Too shallow, pouring on saturated ground, insufficient reinforcement, missing anchor bolts, and skipping required inspections.
