1. Not Curing at All
The biggest mistake is skipping curing entirely. Without it, the surface dries too quickly, leading to crazing, dusting, and reduced strength.
2. Curing Too Late
Curing must begin within an hour of finishing in hot weather. The next day is far too late.
3. Wrong Curing Method
In Central Texas summer, spray-applied curing compound is most practical. Using plastic in direct sun can cause discoloration.
4. Insufficient Duration
Keep concrete moist for minimum 7 days, up to 14 for high-performance mixes.
5. Allowing Rapid Drying
Wind is concrete's enemy during curing. Even moderate wind on a warm day causes plastic shrinkage cracking.
6. Loading Too Early
Follow recommended wait times: 24-48 hours for foot traffic, 7-14 days for vehicles.
7. Ignoring Temperature
Hot concrete cures faster but risks thermal cracking. In Central Texas, early morning pours and proper evaporation management are essential.
